Monospaced Typefaces may be Serif or Sans Serif. They are a small category of faces with very specific applications. Most letters in the character set are given the same space on a line as every other letter in the character set. The 'I' is less wide than the 'W', but both 'consume' the same width in a Monospaced typeface. This is achieved by giving the less wide characters additional white space [ or side bearings] either side of the character. The most obvious application for Monospaced fonts are columns of numerals and tables in Financial doccuments.
