The Gothic Subdivision are the Textura Scripts with their strong perpendicular stems and lack of curves in the minuscules; the Fraktur with its introduction of curves; the Schwabacher with the more simple unadorned lines and the Rotunda with its half Gothic look. These are the four minor subdivisions that make up the Gothics. All Gothic typefaces are based upon the lettering of mediaeval manuscripts, the major characteristic being the narrow counters and strongly emphasised perpendicular stems. Generally these faces have a black appearance and hence they are known as Blackletter in the USA. |
