Stone Type Foundry designs, produces and markets designs for the professional typographer. The company also does custom typeface design and identity and signage programs for public and private institutions. Recent and current projects include Mobil Corporation, General Motors, Stanford University, San Francisco Public Library, and Scripps College. Sumner Stone is fascinated by written forms because they do not exist in a vacuum but occupy a position at the confluence of many different streams of human life such as language, visual perception, intellect, kinesthesia, emotion and social structure. From his point of view Typeface design therefore involves the knowledge and practice of many disciplines, the underpinnings of which are drawing and the history of letterforms. His practice and study of these for more than thirty years is one influence in the solution for a typeface design problem whether it is designing a text typeface at the limits of condensation (Print) or a humanistic slab serif drawn entirely on the screen of the computer (Silica). However, there are many other influences as well. Each new project is a challenge to old aesthetics and received wisdom for Sumner Stone. It is a new window on some part of society, an active path through his own eyes, mind, hands, and spirit to join the past and the future.
