The major criterion of book publishing is that the choice of the typeface must encourage the reader to read, even though this is obvious, it is sometimes overlooked in the enthusiasm to present a new text image. This means that the faces selected will always be serifs and usually with a modest x-height which allows the ascenders and descenders to introduce space between the lines, hence facilitating reading. Modern typefaces with their greater range of weights are favoured in book publishing because often a type hierarchy is required with headings, subheadings, text and sometimes even footnotes. |
