With book publishing, serif faces are nearly always selected from a small number of groups. Generously rounded serifs are used where little information is involved, as in the case of coffee table books, while serif text faces with a better character count are employed for publications with a significant number of pages. The better character economy also helps hyphenation, particularly in novels which are always justified. Bembo and Cochin are typical rounded faces while Baskerville and Caslon represent the middle order and Times New Roman epitomises the condensed design. |
