While readability is obviously an important aspect of magazine titling, of equal importance is grabbing the readerís attention. So the style of headings used by magazines ranges from the ITC display renderings of faces such as Garamond, Century and Cheltenham through to interesting sans serifs such as Kable and Syntax and finally even distressed faces such as Trixie and Confidential ó all trying to capture the readerís attention. In the 1980s, there was a trend towards tall thin headings using faces such as Arcadia. Now in the new millennium the movement has been towards smaller sized headings employing bold serifs with generous use of white space. |
