The signage industry occupies a very important position in Graphic Arts, being the initiator of the digitisation of type. For hundreds of years signwriting was a handcraft, however this changed dramatically in the late1970s with the work of Peter Karow and the development of the IKARUS system which finally provided a way of cutting letters from vinyl film via a computer..The enormous advantage of such digital type for signage was that the letters, from very small to very large, all could be cut with the same smooth curves. Signage alphabets are usually on the robust side but rarely do ultra bolds work well because of their minuscule counters and while most faces can be used. very detailed or textured type is usually avoided as well as the lighter weights. The typeface Frutiger was originally designed as a result of a study of signage requirements by Adrian Frutiger. |
