There are special requirements for typesetting dictionaries. A lot of text is presented on the page and it must be easily readable at a small point size. hence the typeface must have open counters The entry words are are usually a bolder version of the text although there is a modern trend to use a contrasting sans serif. Plantin and Century Expanded are often used for the text however an exclusive series of dictionary typefaces have been designed in Holland. These faces have variants of short and long (and sometimes medium) ascenders and descenders to facilitate text and display seamlessly within the one typeface. The Dutch company Enschedé offers a number of such faces, including Trinité and Lexicon |
